Concert Band provides an opportunity to explore and perform a wide variety of excellent band music. In addition to its regular concerts, the band performs at festivals each year and is the host of the CBA Northern Regional Middle School Festival.
Symphonic Band is comprised of the school’s finest woodwind, brass, and percussion players. The band performs outstanding band literature, while maintaining a balance between standard repertoire and recent compositions. In addition to its regular concerts, the band performs at many festivals. Some members of the Symphonic Band are selected as the wind and percussion section for the Symphony Orchestra. The band has worked with such esteemed guest conductors as Douglas Akey, Dr. Lowell Graham, Tom Leslie, and Dr. Richard Mayne. Guest soloists have included James Bonney, Lauren Murray, William Pfund, Shanna Toews, and Dr. Nathaniel Wickham. Numerous members of this outstanding ensemble are selected to the Colorado All-State Bands and Orchestras each year.
Jazz Ensemble performs a wide variety of styles including swing, rock, Latin, and ballads. In addition to its regular concerts, Jazz Ensemble I performs at the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival each spring. Guest artists have included the Darren Kramer Organization and Paul McKee.
Lion Pride Marching Band features a powerful horn line, dynamic marching and pit percussion, and an exciting dance team. In addition to performing at all home football games, the band marches in the Loveland Corn Roast Parade and participates in CU Band Day. The band was the 2002 Class 3A State Champion. All members of the MVHS Concert Band and Symphonic Band are involved in the marching band.
About the Directors
Mr. Peter Toews has been the Director of Bands and Orchestras at MVHS since the school opened in August, 2000. He also teaches Music History, Music Theory, AP Music Theory, and piano. Mr. Toews holds a Bachelor's Degree in K-12 Music Education and a Master's Degree in Conducting from the University of Northern Colorado, where he served as a graduate teaching assistant . While at UNC, Mr. Toews was awarded the Departmental Scholar Award, and was selected for membership in Pi Kappa Lambda (the National Music Honor Society). He is an active member of ASTA, CBA, CMEA, NAfME, and Phi Beta Mu. He has held positions on the governing boards for both the Colorado All-State Band and All-State Orchestra. Mr. Toews was selected as the 2002-2003 Teacher of the Year at Mountain View High School, and the 2013-2014 Thompson Education Foundation Secondary Teacher of the Year. In 2013, he was awarded a citation for his work in the field of music education by the National Band Association. He continues to perform and serve as a clinician on a regular basis while living in Greeley with his wife, Shanna, and their twins, Alyson and Michael.
